Dog Carriers
& Strollers
for dogs on the go
Show your dog the world! Most
American Hairless Terriers (AHTs) travel very well and enjoy it. Let your AHT
accompany you when you take a trip or run daily errands. Many
places that don't allow dogs, will let you have your little one with
you if he or she is securely inside a bag. :O)
Wheeled pet carriers
are great for transport and they double as dog beds during the trip.
They are also great for
airplane trips, you can wheel your dog through the airport.
Many of these carriers can be used as a rolling bag, backpack, or
carrying bag with a handle.
Before the first trip,
let your dog become accustomed to the new carrier. Put your pup in
the carrier several times, and always give him a treat for going
in.
Before the flight, call
the the airline to be sure your pet carrier is approved by them. You
can also take your dog to the airport in the carrier at a non-busy
time to check with the airline in person. This is a good dry-run for your dog
as well.
If
traveling by plane, your dog needs to stay in his carrier under your
seat during the flight. Most dogs travel well in the airplane cabin
and don't need any sedatives which can be dangerous. The noises and
engine vibrations seem to soothe them to sleep. If needed, you can give
you dog a few reassuring pets every now and then. Stay relaxed, and
your dog will relax too.
Before the flight, let
your pup have a good run or a hard play session to release energy.
Holding food is also a good idea. Most dog owners hold the food for
about 6-12 hours before the flight. Many owners also stop offering
water about 2 hours before the flight, but others give their
dogs water as needed during the travel. If it's hot and your dog
pants a lot, he will of course need water! If possible, let your dog
potty outside just before going through the security.
For flying, waterproof
your dog carrier by putting an
absorbent pooch pad on the bottom. They come in several sizes.
Some people use adult incontinence pads for this because they are
very absorbent and reasonably priced.
You could also try
doggie diapers or human diapers. With human diapers you will
need to cut a hole for the tail. For boy dogs, you can use a belly
bands too. Belly bands are simple to make
yourself. Just sew a double band of fabric to fit your dog, kind of
like a belt around your dog's waist. Use velcro for closure and put
a ladies' napkin inside for extra absorbency.
In the travel bag, lay a soft fleece
blanket on the top of the absorbent pad for you
dog's comfort. Also include your dog's favorite chew toy. Be sure to have extra pads and blankets on hand for
changes in case your dog has an accident during the flight. For
hairless dogs, have an extra change of clothing as well. Put
soiled clothes and wee pads in zip-lock bags to reduce the odor.
Moist wipes are great for fast cleanups.
During the trip, take
your dog to the airport bathroom if you cannot go outside. Put a
doggie
wee-wee pad or a newspaper (whatever your dog is used to) on the
floor and give your dog a chance to go. Additionally, you can do
this during a long flight in the airplane bathroom if necessary.
Paper training pays off here. Always clean up after your
dog!
