Jan 7, 07 - 8:15 AM Am I alleric to our new puppy or is the dog
contagious?
My mom bought our kids an 8 week old border collie for Christmas. We
noticed last week she was scratching and digging on herself. I take
her to the vet wednesday. But now my husband, one of our kids and I
are all itching. I am the worst. I have red bumps all over my back,
butt, backs of legs, stomache, and arms. They only itch with a few
bumps. I think I'm gonna go to the Dr. tomorrow. I don't know if we
are allergic or did our new puppy have something and give it to us.
But any suggestion would be appreciated.

Jan 24th, 2007 - 3:07 PM Re: Am I alleric to our new puppy or is the

I rescued a boxer/staffordshire terrior mix from a shelter last
weekend. I've grown up with dogs, and lived with a german shephard
mix as recently as September, with no allergy problems. However,
within hours of getting my new dog home I broke out in an itchy rash
on my neck, torso, and arms. Within 24 hours it was full blown hives
all over my body including my face and scalp. I went to the doctor,
and she prescribed Prednisone and suggested that i also take
Benedryl. I gave the dog back to the shelter, and two days later I'm
completely symptom free. I've made an appointment with an allergist
for a full screening. I really hope that my allergies are limited to
certain breeds, and not all dogs.

hi...my 8 month old recently had a rash covering her body, with

she had, my in-laws have a pug, and the night the rash showed up, we
were at their house!! now my mother-in-law insists her precious dog

Jan 29th, 2007 - 5:56 PM Re: baby allergic to dog
My eldest son, now 7, was allergic to two different dogs(2 seperate
times) that we had when he was a baby. He would be congested, had
eczema, sneezed, itchy eyes and constant coughing. We had to find
new homes for the dogs(unfortunately). By the age of 2 he was
diagnosed with Asthma. His symptoms do seem to be less frequent as
the years go by so we are considering and researching different
breeds that may work. As much as I truely miss having a family dog,
it is certainly worth a dogs absense in exchange for a comfortable
happy child!Good luck.

Feb 4, 07 - 1:00 PM Samoyed allergen levels?
Greetings, forum-
My significant other and I are considering adopting a samoyed rescue
dog. I have some very mild allergies to dogs (I can pet and handle
many of the "shedding" varieties for hours, with no problem. The
only memory I have of a problem was when I stayed at a home with
several German Shepards).
My question is this: does anyone have any experience with Samoyeds
vis-a-vis allergies? Common-sense would say that they would be
highly allergenic, but I'm learning that dander levels do not
necessarily correspond to amount of hair/hair type/shedding.
Many thanks for any help,
Mathilde

Feb 21, 07 - 10:19 AM Found cause of my rashes.
I wanted to pass this along to try to help some dog lovers. I have
recently had a run in with weird rashes involving my puppy. I have
two dogs from basically the same blood line...one has more pitbull,
though. With my oldest dog I have had no allergies and up until my
littlest turned 6mths old, I hadn't had any problems with him,
either.
My problem started with a change in his food. My vet suggested I try
a cheaper food that has gotten good results for him...so I slowly
intergrated it into my puppies feed. With in two weeks of the
change, I was breaking out in rashes & welps on my neck, arms, back
and face (not just where he had given kisses or been in contact
with) within minutes of contact with him. Since then, I have removed
this food from his diet & I am now fine with all kisses and contact.
So there might be a chance that it is the dog food that some are
allergic to, instead of the dog.
Now I'm on to conquering my cat allergies. (I have allergy induced
asthma with contact with cats).

Mar 15, 07 - 12:46 PM Allergic to one type of breed??
My In-Law's have a mini schnauzer and owned 2 golden retrievers in
the past (the last one was put to sleep after being diagnosed with
cancer in May,06). This past August they adopted another golden. All
of the sudden my MIL claims to be allergic to the golden but not the
schnauzer??? Is that possible?

Mar 20th, 2007 - 5:11 PM Re: Allergic to one type of breed??
Yes, it's possible. Schnauzers are among the dog breeds less likely
to cause allergic reactions in people. Goldens are not. See

My allergist suggested a shampoo like head and shoulders for my dog.
I'm not sure how safe this is for the animal

Some people claim good results with
Allerpet D product, while others notice no difference at all.

Feb 26, 07 - 12:10 PM allergy to Jack Russell?
I have had pets all of my 52 years, but this is the first short
haired house dog - a loving Jack Russell who spends much time on my
lap. I have many tiny bumps on my face, along my jawline - barely
visible but I know they are there!! What creams work good for this?

Mar 20th, 2007 - 5:21 PM Re: allergy to Jack Russell?
Try an over-the-counter antihistamine tablet like Claritin which
doesn't make you drowsy (or its generic version), to see if it makes
a difference. If not, it might not be an allergic reaction. You
could also try otc hydrocortisone cream, but use it sparingly.

Feb 11, 07 - 10:54 AM Pug Puppy! Please help!
We are getting a pug puppy next weekend. I do have some allergies to
dogs, but Im hoping that by keeping the house vacuumed, getting a
hepa air filter, using a dander reducing lotion etc...will help.
Has anyone ever had a Pug? Are they worse for your allergies?

Do a search for "pug" in the above search box and you will find many
messages on this board related to Pugs and allergies. In general,
Pugs are not a good choice for pet allergic people.

Feb 1, 07 - 9:38 PM Can you be allergic to only one dog?
I no longer live at home and my dad says that he is now allergic to
my dog. I have had my dog for 4 years now and this problem has only
started about a year ago. I have tried doing all the things to
reduce pet dander in my home such as, Using a hepa filter, we have
hardwood floors put in, not allowing my dog to jump on or lick us,
As well as putting clothes on straight from the dryer for the whole
family before we visit my dad. It's gotten so bad that we are not
allowed to visit any of the family because if my mom goes anywhere
we've been the pet dander gets onto her clothes and she then
transfers it back to dad at their home. My dad also has 2 cats and 2
dogs living with him one is the exact same breed as ours and they
don't cause any problems. Anybody have any advice?
HELP dad wants us to get rid of our dog but I think it's all in his
head.

Mar 20th, 2007 - 5:30 PM Re: Can you be allergic to only one dog?
Are all of these three dogs spayed or neutered? Some people claim
they are more allergic to non-neutered and non-spayed dogs
(different hormone levels).

Mar 27th, 2007 - 7:16 AM Re: All of a sudden alergic to my dog
It is very possible to all of a sudden be allergic to your dog,
especially after being pregnant. I had a long hair cat and a boston
terrier for 6 years with no allergy problems at all. They both slept
in my bed. No long, 3 or 4 mon, after my first baby was born I
started getting itchy eyes and sneezing, before long the animals
could not sleep with me, then I couldn't even let them in my room,
and by 2 years I couldn't pet either one without immediately washing
my hands, and then sometimes I still needed benedryl. Four yrs later
I was able to handle the cat if I washed my hands and face
immediately afterwards. Then came the 2nd baby and the allergies
became stronger, and with the third I was living with the cat, but
not in my bed room and very rarely touching him. This was 7 years
after I first started showing allergic reactions. The doctors I
spoke to said that our bodies can change over time, but for women it
is more common during preg. due to chemical changes and harmones.

Dec 3, 04 - 2:39 PM Strange rash
hi, my 11 month old daughter began to get a rash a short while after
we got a rat terrier puppy. the rash is not everywhere. the only
place she gets it is on her chest, either in small bumps or red
circles. the doctor said it is not ringworm, the vet said the dog
does not have ringworm. it is present for about a week, will go away
for a few days then return on her chest. she is always fully clothed
and is constantly in contact with the dog, but a rash nowhere else.
any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Nov 13th, 2006 - 12:36 AM Re: Strange rash
Hi Josh,
This may be something youve done already, but have you taken your
little one for a skin test? Mine had one recently and we discovered
it was cats! The excthma is unfortunately hereditary and something
my brother suffered from ( mostly on the legs - like my boy )
Im not too keen on bieng palmed off on bloody steroid creams - they
are not good for small children.. I came on this site looking for
some ideas or old fashioned remedies as this condition is nothing
new!
If I come across anything Ill mail you and let you know... but as
far as my (limited ) knowledge goes excthma and allergy are totally
different.
Ps: Have you tried changing the brand of washing powder for your
family wash? That sometimes causes havoc with young skin...
Good luck , and let me know of any good info?
Thanks - Matt

Jan 29th, 2007 - 5:59 PM Re: Strange rash
Sounds like eczema. My son had it too and was later diagnosed with
Asthma. The doc the 2 are virtually the same except one is internal
and the other external. He suggested Eucerin cream and it did help.

Regarding the rash, I recently heard of a baby that was getting an
allergic reaction to some component in the metal snaps on onesies
and sleepers. Check to see of the rings on the skin are in the
location of the snaps. Strange-but true!!

Apr 19, 07 - 6:27 PM son's allergies
I am allergic to dogs, and haven't owned one in several years. My 5
yr old son is on meds for asthma and tested pos. for dust, trees and
pollen. He was negative for dogs and cats. His ENT said we could try
owning a dog as long as environmental controls are in place. His
asthma/allergist said he would advise against it. Our plan is to get
a labradoodle and allow it only in the non-carpeted areas of the
house. I am willing to return to shots and meds for myself. The
problem is, we're having trouble making a decision. I don't want to
jeopardize his health, as he has chronic upper resp. illnesses. Any
wisdom out there???

Apr 19th, 2007 - 8:02 PM Re: son's allergies
Hi Jen,
I wouldn't get a dog. Not only for your son, but for you. I have a
mild allergy to dogs and owned 2 dogs for years until they passed
away. I rescued a young poodle mix 6 months ago. I am pretty
allergic to her and have to take meds everyday and I am getting
shots weekly. I also had bronchitis and numerous colds since getting
her. I love her, but I often think about finding her a new home. It
has been pretty stressful. I would not like to see you go through
the same thing. It is difficult giving up a pet. I also would hate
to see your son suffer with respiratory issues due to the dog. Even
if he is not allergic to dogs they bring pollen in from the outside,
etc. This is just my opinion and situation. I wish you luck in
whatever you choose.

helped alittle but not much. then the day after thanksgiving went to
work with contacts in and i was fine all day, untill i got home to
my baby corgi, then my eye started acting up... what could cause
this? like i said i had 2 cats, 2 german sheppards and a dachsund
before and this never hapened...

Nov 27th, 2006 - 6:28 PM Re: first time allergy
If you cannot pinpoint any other reason for the eye irritation, you
could indeed be allergic to your new dog.
Getting a new dog after not having any for a while could trigger
allergies that you didn't have before (or at least not as bad). This
happened to me.

Apr 30th, 2007 - 12:53 PM Re: first time allergy
As women leave their prime childbearing years, the immune system
that was "quiet" to enable carrying foreign protein (i.e. a fetus),
can become quite active. Women who never had problems in the past
can develop allergies to any number of formerly tolerated
substances/animals. Annecdotely, redheads are especially prone to
this phenomenon.
