Boarding kennel is a good idea. After taking your dog to a boarding kennel, vacuum and clean your house as thoroughly as possible. Wash and put away in plastic bags anything that your dog uses, like his bed and soft toys. Air the house by opening several windows for through drafts.

If you cannot board your dog, give him a bath with a mild dog shampoo. Wash all his bedding, soft toys, and anything else he might have. Vacuum, clean, and air your house thoroughly. Keep the dog away in a separate room with the door closed, away from your boyfriend. If you don't have a separate room, try the bathroom. If you have a HEPA aircleaner, keep it on all the time in the room where your boyfriend is.

If your boyfriend doesn't use prescription allergy meds, you can buy non-drowsy over-the-counter Claritin (or generic, check the labels for the active ingredient) to help calm down his allergic reactions.

Jul 27, 05 - 5:14 PM Do Allergy Shots Work / Help ?

I was at the petstore the other day and I found a website (collierescurenetwork.com) and I saw one of the collies and fell in love with him the moment I saw his picture. My sister and mom also want to adopt this dog.

The problem is my dad! He says he can't live with a dog so we arent allowed to get one. He has been getting allergy shots for years now. Now heres the question : Do allergy shots work ? I keep saying to him "If you cant live with a dog and youre still getting shots, then whats the point if they dont work!?" He's had 2 dogs before but only when I was really small. Both were hit o the road, but apparently, even without the shots back then my dad was fine!

I tried 'em (for mold allergies, not dog allergies) and they helped...a tiny bit. But I still moved out of state as soon as possible. On the other hand, I know people who they worked perfectly for. They started taking them, and Bam, allergies were a thing of the past. I think each person is just different. If he's like me, your dad might be able to pet a dog because of the allergy shot, but wouldn't be able to live with one.

According to allergists my husband and I have seen, dog allergies are the most difficult to treat, and often become progressively worse as a person ages. So, just because dad survived dogs years ago doesn't mean he'll survive them now. And, think of it this way: the shots may keep him from having a sudden attack in a place he cannot control outside home. Please have compassion for your father. He is probably tired of defending himself, tired of trying to convince people, people who say they love him, that he has allergies.. I love dogs, but as a kid, my mom was serverely allergic to them (now I am, too). We had to make a lot of sacrafices for her. Someday, when you don't live with dad, you can decide to get a pet of your own. But, if you love him, please keep his home a safe place for him to breathe. Someday, like me, it may be you that wants your family to understand.

Mar 20, 06 - 10:01 AM My 5 year old is allergic to dander and saliva...

he breaks out in a rash/hives wherever he gets licked, eyes run, and he starts wheezing. My sister-in-law just got a german shepherd mix, which is an indoor dog. She wants us to come and visit, but I'm concerned about the effects on our son. Is there a way to safely visit them? My son's health definitely comes first!

I love you Cindy! Thanks for putting your child first! My husband and I are allergic to dogs, and in the past, we've worn ventilated dust masks to our family's houses to help us breathe, Unfortunately, they are hot and uncomfortable and we look crazy, and our allergies have progressed to the point that we still have attacks even with masks on. BUT, you might give it a try.

May 16, 06 - 6:57 AM First meeting elsewhere

Own a German Shepherd and a Siberian Husky whom I really care for but lots of hair. Have corresponded a couple months w/a great guy online who is allergic to dogs. Should our first face-to-face meeting, in June, be away from my house or should I try the environmental scrubbing etc. and invite him here? Thanks for any tips.

May 16th, 2006 - 10:07 AM Re: First meeting elsewhere

Unfortunately, German Shepherds and Huskies are thought to be more likely than average to trigger allergies in sensitive people. In general, these are breeds that dog allergic people should avoid.

For your own safety, I would meet in a public place when meeting for the first time. Later, if you feel like it, you could invite him over and see how he reacts to your dogs. If he cannot tolerate your dogs allergywise, they won't be much of a chance for a relationship...

Before he comes over, give both of your dogs a bath. Vacuum and clean your house thoroughy. Wash all your dogs' bedding and toys. Open the windows and air out your house.

Let us know how it goes with the dogs.
Good luck!

Jun 5, 06 - 8:29 AM Lhasa Apso & Caniche

Good Morning,

I just purchased a 7 week old mix of lhasa apso and caniche. Now my sister wants to purchase the sister, but her husband seems to have allergies.

He spent 2 hours at my house and only after he left did he begin to have itchy eyes and runny nose.

Does anyone know about this type of dog, and if he only reacts after 2 hours, is it a major problem to get the dog???

Thx

Jun 15, 06 - 11:19 PM eczema and Cavachons

My daughter is allergic to pet dander among other things. She really wants a dog, along with our other kids, and we've been researching Chavachons (Bichon Frise/Cavalier King Charles Spaniel cross breed) and have heard they have little to no shedding but does anyone know if they have little to no dander? That is what she is allergic to.

Are you itching all over ? I need to know, I have never had a problem with dogs in my entire life. A couple weeks ago my grandma passed away and I was lucky enough to get her dog. He sleeps with me and sits on my lap all the time. I have been itching all over every since. I am trying to find out if I it is an allergy to. I have been to the doctor and she says I just have hives. Gave me this medicine but it doesnt work. How about you?

If you are itching and your symptoms started when you got the dog (and nothing else changed in your immediate environment), it is very likely that you are indeed allergic to the dog.

Jul 15, 06 - 10:40 AM Chinese crested's father is podwer puff and mother is hairless one

I'm thinking of getting a chinese crested puppy. I have surfed breeders' websites and I found out that many of the breeders mixes powderpuff and hairless ones to get hairless and powderpuff puppies.
So is it safe for me as an allergic person to get one of these mixed puppies? Are the hairless ones still "lower dander" dogs?
This may be a stupid question. I just wonder because on this website hasn't any information of powderpuffs?

(sorry for my bad english)

Hairless and powderpuff Chinese Cresteds are one breed. They naturally occur together in litters. If you are allergic to dogs, the hairless Crested is a better choice for you. Visit a local Crested breeder to test your allergies.

Xolos and Peruvian Hairless dogs also have dominant hairlessness and thus have both hairless and coated pups in their litters.

Only the American Hairless Terrier has recessive hairlessness - hairless parents can only produce hairless puppies.

Jul 20, 06 - 5:05 PM Heart problems from dog

Recently we purchased a border collie cross puppy that now lives inside.

Since living with the dog I have experienced severe heart and gut pains.
Nothing else in my environment or living style has changed - other than I have stopped exercise.

I went to my naturopath who has a long successful history of looking after me, and uses a Vega machine to detect allergies.

He has said that my intestines are "cold" - the next stage being they will become blocked - which is not good at all and he also asked me if I had heart pains - he volunteered this before I told him I have.
He gave me some liver cleanser and ran an ultrasound on my intestines to "heat" up the area. This relieved the pain temporarily. He also said that the pains were from an allergy to the dogs sweat, and that cross breeds have a tendency to sweat more due to larger pores - puppy is a male by the way.
He is away presently and about to retire, unfortunately the pains have become unbearable and I am now booking into seeing a doctor for heart scans I am 37 and relatively fit.

Has anyone had any similar issues with heart pains after getting a dog?

There are several AHT families in Pennsylvania, including Philly, willing to do allergy trials. See the AHTA site at AHTmap.htm.
