Hi all, this is my first message posted. I am just enquiring about dog allergies in particular. In my area the police are starting a scheme to take Sniffer dogs into schools to screen children for drugs. Its a great Idea, but I think alot of people will try and get out of being screened by saying that they are allergic to dogs. So my question is if a dog simply walks past a child will this have a great affect on his/her allergy!!

May 26, 05 - 1:48 PM Dog Allergies / Service Dogs in Schools

My 5 year old son (diagnosed with severe Autism) will be placed with a dog from the national service dogs this fall.(www.nsd.on.ca). I hear that the school he will attend has a teacher claiming to be "deathly" allergic to dogs - needless to say this is creating major issues with our desire for this dog to attend school with our son. Can someone be "deathly" allergic? (I always thought pet dander on the other children would be just as bad - cat dander effects me this way.) Is there anything we can do to minimize our dogs impact on people who suffer any level of allergy to dogs - for this dog to attend school with our son?

Yes, it is possible to be deathly allergic. Anaphylactic shock is a severe allergic reaction which can cause death within minutes if not treated immediately. People with a known life-threatening allergy should always carry an adrenaline kit (Epipen Autoinjector device) with them for emergencies.

Bathing your dog frequently, maybe once a week, with a mild dog shampoo will help reduce the amount of allergen on the dog's fur. Be sure to use a shampoo that will not overdry the dog's skin and cause more flaking.

Frequent bathing will help reduce allergic reactions in people who are mildly allergic to dogs, but I doubt it will do much for a person who suffers from a severe, life-threatening allergy to dogs.

May 26, 05 - 7:25 PM Psoriasis or allergy?

We bought a new lab in July. I have never owned a dog before since my grandmother was allergic. My husband and I have had several cats and I never had any problems. However, within days of getting the puppy, I started breaking out everywhere. My derm diagnosed it as psoriasis, and said it couldn't be the dog. However, none of the medicine is helping and its horrible! Anyone have any ideas?

Jun 1, 05 - 7:51 AM Poodles and Dalmatians both affected me

I have a long history of allergies, but I have not had a problem with our four Dalmatians over a 20-year span. However, we got a dalmatian puppy in May for my 15-year-old daughter, who is extremely responsible and very motivated. She even paid for the puppy herself.

After a week with the puppy, I was an allergic basket case, and I made her give it up. She handled it better than I expected, but I felt terrible about it. She sold it to her 17-year-old boyfriend, so she can still see the puppy once in awhile--spending more time with the boyfriend than I would like.

Last weekend, we got a poodle from a breeder, thinking it would be a low-allergy dog. We did vacuum the house, but I had a lot of allergy problems during the weekend, though it was also one of the worst pollen weeks in memory. I kept telling myself it was the pollen. I even spent eight hours on a trip in the car with the dog and didn't feel too bad. But now after four days with the dog and the pollen count dropping, I still have lots of asthma and hay fever despite lots of drugs.

I have to assume there is a mind game going on here, too. My stress often goes to my body, including my back. I am not crazy about pets. I saw her old puppy about a block away the other day and my eyes started to itch. I am deeply torn about making her give up this dog or trying to ride through the allergy season and wait until fall (she and her mother go to the country during the summer.) I would appreciate any thoughts you have. Thank you.

Mar 28, 05 - 1:34 PM Itchy rash from our Boxer puppy

Hi, we got a boxer puppy about 6 weeks ago, and I haven't had a dog since I was little. Well, If I pet her too much or she licks me, I get these itchy welts. They aren't red, they are skin colored, but they itch and they are gross, and they are only where she has touched me. Then they are warm to the touch too. I know I am slightly allergic because I have been tested before, but WHAT can I do about it???? I don't want to get rid of her. Is there anything to get rid of getting those bumps? They last about a half hour and then go away on there own but I hate them!!!! HELP!!

Thanks

Try giving your dog frequent baths (twice a week is recommended in one allergy study) to reduce the amount of allergens on her coat. Use only a small amount of mild, non-drying dog shampoo. Also, teach your pup not to lick you.

Thank you! We give her a bath once a week right now. She is very short coat, so I don't think that is it, but its when her nose or mouth touches my skin. It is very annoying, because I can't even play with her right now! Maybe when she gets older it will be better??

May 27th, 2005 - 7:52 AM Re: Itchy rash from our Boxer puppy

Hey I am glad to see your post, I just bought a boxer puppy a week ago and have the same thing except my bumps do not go away as quickly and come back the second she touches me! I dont want to give her up for anything in the world!! I have fallen in love with her! I had a boxer when I was younger, and I was not allergic to her until my brother moved out and took her with him. I am assuming that I will just get use to it and it will not be as bad (I HOPE!!) also, when she grows up I will not have so much constant contact with her as I do now.. like having her to pick up... etc... Please post if you find anything out!! Thanks, Roxy

Jun 7, 05 - 1:54 PM New Mix Pup

We adopted a mix from the shelter a little over a month ago and I've now all of a sudden developed a rash all over my face, and a few bumps on my arms and legs. I'm guessing it's from my pup. She is five months old (rott/american bulldog mix).

Has anyone tried taking Zyrtec for your allergies? I take Singulair, NasalCort AQ, and Clarinex right now. None of them seem to be working.

Are there any good shampoos out there for her?

Yes, it sounds like you are allergic to your dog. Especially if these symptoms happen after interacting with your dog or being near your dog. Unfortunately, Rottweilers and Am Bulldogs are not the best choices for dog allergy sufferers. Plus, they are large dogs that produce a lot more dander than little dogs.

Ask your allergist for advice on meds. Clarinex might not be strong enough for you.

Vacuum your house frequently, give your dog weekly baths with a mild dog shampoo (e.g. oatmeal), wash all dog bedding and toys weekly, and air out your house frequently. For more environmental control tips, see the "Allergic to Dogs?" page.

Thanks so much for all your good advice. I'll be sure and wash her bed weekly now, as well as vacuum.

Jun 22, 05 - 10:51 AM Isiaha and Nathan

Hello -
I have a 3 year old and an 8 month old. Here is my problem...last year we decided to buy a dog for my then 2 year old and his peditrican told us that he was allergic to dogs. We had to get rid of "pepsi" and it was not until later that we decided to do the skin test to find out just what was causing his allergies since we got rid of his puppy and he still had them. Well he had no allergies not even to dogs.
We finally decided to get another dog and this time we got a Baset Hound. My husband took the kids to the doctor yesterday since they had a cold. The Dr told him that she knew that Isiaha did not have allergies to dogs because she received the results from the allergist, however she believes that Nathan is allergic to dogs and other animals. Nathan is too small to get tested for allergies and becuase the dr was wrong once already we are not sure what to do wtih our new puppy Angel.
If anyone has any suggestions please tell me....
I would hate to break my older sons heart again. he really likes his new puppy.
Thanks

Jun 23, 05 - 8:32 PM Question about allergic symptom

Hi

I'm new to the phorum. My son is allergic to dogs (his reactions varies on the dog and the cleanliness of the house we visit). A week ago they gave us two labrador puppies. I've been keeping them outside and been constantly washing my boy's hands and face when he plays with them. However he has develop an itch on his head. I was wondering if anybody knows if this is an allergic symptom? (because he has never had this before)

Thanks

Jun 30, 05 - 1:30 PM New Dog, roommates

I am thinking about getting a maltipo in the next couple months. My roommate is allergic to dogs yet had a Wheaton and was fine with it in her house. It didn't sleep in her bed and was outside some of the time and in a crate but she does not have allergic reacitons to it. I'm worried that if I get a dog becuase it is a small apartment she will start having reactions. Does anyone have any suggestions. I would hate to get a dog and then have it make her sick but I really would like to get a puppy. We have hardwood floors and it would sleep in my room and then spend time in the living room/kitchen area during the day.
Thanks
