Dr Wright: "Overall, the literature shows that the protective effect from having a pet is both strong (with odds ratios as low as 0.1 in the direction of protection) and consistent, in that it's seen in a wide variety of settings, although not in every single study."
Dr Ownby: "The studies showing that dogs and cats protect against allergic disease are highly inconsistent. These inconsistent findings suggest that dog or cat ownership is a marker for some other differences in lifestyle that strongly influence the risk of allergic sensitization and symptoms."
